Epidural Catheterization using a Subcutaneous Tunneling for Treatment of Terminal Cancer Pain


Abstract
Thirty patients with cancer pain refractory to other methods of pain control were treated with epidural morphine delivered through a placed percutaneous lumbar epidural catheter with a subcutaneous tunneling.
morphine requirements during first 1 week were 6-10mg/day. Maximum opioid requirement before death day was morphine 15-100mg/day. Mean catheter life span was about 30 days. Side effects after epidural morphine wee nausea and vomiting (27%),
urinary
retention, pruritis, respiratory depression (13%).
